Campaign Launched to Help 7-Year-Old In Need of Cord Blood
7-year-old Millie D’Cruz has diagnosed with metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD), a genetic disease that affects the nerves and muscles. The disease, which currently has no cure, causes problems with muscle control, nerve functions and mental functions. MLD worsens over time, and the D’Cruz family is searching for donations to fund a $318 000 cord blood or bone marrow transplant.
Although there is no true cure for MLD, a transplant has the best chances of helping someone like Millie, who exhibits few signs and symptoms of the disease. Without treatment, patients with MLD go blind and become paralyzed.
In North Carolina, the treatment was available for $604 000, but doctors in Holland offered Millie’s parents the procedure for just $318 000, making their goal a bit more attainable.
People all over the world have come together to help Millie, in hopes that their contribution will be able to fund the expensive stem cell transplant. Several organizations have hosted charity events to help the family and individuals can make contributions via credit card or PayPal through her website.
People across the UK and North American have also take to Twitter to increase awareness about Mille’s story. Visit http://www.helpmillie.co.uk/ for more information on how you can help.
