Charity Event Hosted to Support New Cord Blood Fund
A charity golf tournament is scheduled for October 2, 2012 to help fund the establishment of the new Robert K. Dempski Cord Blood Research Fund. Dempski lost his long battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in February of this year, but vowed that he and his family would support continued research of cord blood technology.
Last year, Robert Dempski underwent chemotherapy for the disease, but the treatment failed. His doctors suggested a bone marrow transplant but when a match could not be found, Robert received an infusion of cord blood-derived stem cells. After seeing a great deal of improvement, the cancer had unforunately continued to spread.
The Dempski family decided to establish a cord blood research fund in Robert's honour, allowing their patriarch to leave behind a research legacy. According to Janet Dempski, there are two main objectives for the research fund. The first is to conduct research that will determine how to speed up the growth of cord blood stem cells in the patient's bone marrow. Secondly, researchers will work on expanding the current uses of cord blood therapy.
Now that the mission of the fund has been determined, all that is left to do is raise money to establish it. Many members of the local community have come together to make fundraising event for the Robert K. Dempski Cord Blood Research Fund possible. Several local businesses have helped to sponsor the event, which will honour the memory of Robert Dempski. Entry into the tournament is $100, and all proceeds will go to the establishment of the Cord Blood Research Fund.
