Cord Blood Bank Regulations Approved in Israel
Israel is just the latest country to support cord blood banking, as the country’s government has approved the new State Cord Blood Bank regulation. The new regulation will give women who cannot afford to privately bank their children’s cord blood the chance to do so with a public bank.
Across the country, there are already four private cord blood banks. Many parents in Israel cannot afford to bank their children’s cord blood at these banks, and are in need of a public option. The new public bank will give parents the ability to donate cord blood.
The new bank will act as a donor bank. Whereas private banks store each cord blood unit specifically for each family’s own use, the donor bank will provide donated samples to any individual that is a match for it. The samples will also be registered with the International Cord Blood Registry.
While public banking is popular many countries around the world, some places do not offer this option to parents. Private family banking has unique benefits, there is a need for both public and family banks.
