Fox Health Covers Benefits of Cord Blood Banking

Yesterday, on Fox News, Dr. Manny discussed the benefits of cord blood banking, giving the industry some much-needed exposure in the mass media.

A view wrote in to Q&A with Dr Manny to ask if he and his wife should consider banking their child’s cord blood after being born. He had recently heard a great deal about stem cell therapy in the news and wanted to Dr. Manny if cord blood banking would be something to consider.

“The blood from your baby’s umbilical cord is a rich source of stem cells”, Dr Manny replied. He then goes on to explain that stem cells are the cell from which all other cells are created.

As such, the stem cells that are derived from cord blood can used to rebuild healthy blood and blood cells for patients currently undergoing treatment for a wide range of diseases. He notes that leukemia and other cancers are commonly treated using cord blood, and that researchers are currently working on ways to use the therapy to treat incurable conditions such as brain injuries.

He encourages the viewer to bank his child’s cord blood, but not without advising him to do his research first to find the best company to entrust with the responsibility.

“I say go for it,” he says. “It can’t hurt, and it can only help”.
