Fundraiser Held For 2-Year-Old Anemia Patient

A community in Acomb, North Yorkshire, have come together to help a family raise the funds necessary for a procedure that will enable their son to undergo a cord blood transplant. The £1000 raised by the sponsored walk will bring the family closer to their £60 000 goal.

William Rhodes, a 2-year-old suffering from blackfan anemia, requires a cord blood transplant to aid in the treatment of his disease. The boy’s parents, Ben and Caroline Rhodes, were told that their best chances to find a match would arise if they were to have another child. However, they are unable to do so without the assistance of genetic treatment.

Without the treatment, William’s parents will be unable to conceive, cutting their son’s chances of obtaining a cord blood transplant. As a result, he will continue to undergo regular blood transfusions. So far, he has received 32 transfusion over the course of his young life.

The walk was just the first step towards reaching their expensive goal. Many other events have been planned by individuals and organizations across the UK who wish to see William Rhodes have a chance at a regular childhood.
