Miracle Baby to Provide Cord Blood Transplant
Amy Wang is a 3-year-old toddler with Fanconi anemia. Her parents Xiaoqing and Ning Liu have tried for two years to conceive a ‘miracle baby’, whose cord blood stem cells could be used to in a cord blood transplant for Amy, and the time is finally near.
Shortly after being born, Amy was diagnosed with Fanconi Anemia, a rare genetic disease that causes bone marrow failure. Amy started to experience that symptom when she was just a year old and for two years her blood platelet count has been dropping steadily.
Last March, the Wang family visited the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for a transplant evaluation. Unfortunately, no match could be found for Amy, and her parents were informed that she was running out of time.
Her parents then began the process of conceiving a second child, whose cord blood would provide the stem cells necessary to treat Amy’s disease. Xiaoqing and Ning Liu underwent several rounds of fertilization via in-virtro and the fifth try resulted in two embryos that presented matches for Amy that were also free of the same disease.
Ning Liu is now approaching her due date and the only thing left for the family to do is await the miracle baby’s arrival. The Wangs are confident that he birth will go smoothly and that Amy will have a new little brother – and the chance at a healthy and happy future.
