Muscular Dystrophy Patient Reponds Well to Cord Blood
Eight-year-old Harshu Singh, who has been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, has been responding well to cord blood transplants. While there is no cure for the disease, stem cell therapy is believed by researchers to be a viable treatment option for muscular dystrophy - and young Harshu is living proof.
At the age of three, Harshu was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy after experiencing trouble walking. His cousins had already been diagnosed with the genetic disorder, and Harshu's doctor informed his family that there was no cure for the disease.
The Singhs began to prepare for the worst until Harshu's mother, Sujata, discovered a story about a young boy who was also diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. He experienced a miraculous recovery after undergoing stem cell therapy and Sujata was convinced that her son would experience the same results.
Harshu has already gone through five sessions of stem cell therapy, during which he has received intravenous injections of umbilical cord blood. So far, Harshu's muscle degeneration reportedly has ceased and he has regained movement in his hands and legs. His doctors believe that these are definite signs of improvement and hope that he will continue to show progress as his therapy continues.
