Senator Promotes Cord Blood Awareness

Umbilical cord blood has the ability to treat a wide variety of diseases and has helped to improve the quality of life for many patients with illnesses like cerebral palsy. Despite the beneficial healing properties of cord blood, many expecting parents are still unaware it its potential uses. That’s why Senator Margaret Sitte is pushing for the passing of a bill that encourages the dissemination of information on cord blood.

Sitte believes that it is only common sense for the state to be proactive in the cord blood industry. Many hospitals discard cord blood as medical waste, despite its ability to be used in the treatment of over 70 different illnesses. By increasing awareness of the benefits of cord blood, Sitte hopes that its application will become more widespread.

Her bill has already garnered support from the Catholic community. The group is normally known for opposing stem cell therapy, but cord blood does no harm to the mother or the child, thus making it acceptable.

The bill was presented at a Senate hearing on Tuesday, where it was met with only support. Sitte did not encounter any opposition when presenting the bill. However, no action has been taken with the legislation as of yet.
