University Awarded Cord Blood Grant

The University of Miami's Pediatric Oncology Program is the recipient of a grant that will help to increase the number of minority cord blood donors in Southern Florida. The $100 000 grant, funded by Hyundai's Hope on Wheels, will help the oncology program recruit more cord blood donors from ethnic backgrounds.

Since Hope on Wheels was launched in 1998, the charity has raised over $43 million to aid childhood cancer research projects and programs. The charity's goal is to support the research projects with the most promising outlooks as well as those that have the potential to make a significan impact on cancer treatment.

This is just one of many grants being awarded by the Hope on Wheels foundation. This year, the charity has provided more than $7.1 million in grants to 71 child cancer research projects and programs across America.

The record-breaking donation was made in support of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. As cord blood is now commonly used to help treat children with varying forms of leukemia, it is great to see charities stepping forward to support the technology. With more funding, research can continue to develop and expand - and doctors can continue to encourage more patients to take part in cord blood banking.
