Insception Lifebank collaborates with leading institutions to develop iPSCs from cord blood and cord tissue

June 28, 2016

Joint venture between Insception Lifebank, the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute and Ontario Centres of Excellence aims to  develop iPSCs from cord blood and cord tissue.

Insception Lifebank Cord Blood Program (“Insception”) is excited to announce its collaboration with Dr. Ian Rogers, from the The Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, part of Sinai Health System, to develop clinical grade induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from umbilical cord blood and tissue.  This collaboration has been awarded funding through the Ontario Centres of Excellence (“OCE”) Voucher for Innovation and Productivity II program which helps established Ontario-based companies develop, implement and commercialize technical innovations by supporting partnerships with academia.
iPSCs hold great promise in the field of regenerative medicine and are considered the gateway to personalized medicine. iPSCs can be propagated indefinitely and can give rise to every cell type in the body (including neurons, heart, pancreatic and liver cells). This renders iPSCs into a single source of cells that could be used in regenerative medicine to replace cells lost to, or damaged by, disease.
The aim of this joint venture with Dr. Rogers is to develop robust technology to produce iPSCs from cord blood and cord tissue, along with other cell sources, and to explore the feasibility of establishing an iPSC banking program at Insception.  If feasible, this program would allow individuals, and families, to bank a secured source of well characterized iPSCs so they could readily take advantage of new cellular therapies being developed world-wide.

Insception, Sinai Health System and OCE are committed to setting the standard for the highest quality in research and innovation. This project will continue to push the future of medicine, contributing to the future health and well-being of Canadians.
