While you are pregnant, you may begin to notice that you’re having a hard time remembering things.  You will likely forget appointments, fail to remember where you left your keys, or not recall if you locked the front door behind you.  This type of short-term memory loss is commonly called ‘pregnancy brain’, and almost all expecting mothers are affected by it.

Pregnancy brain is just another result of your hormones changing as an effect of the unborn baby.  It may be frustrating at first, but pregnancy brain is temporary and completely natural.  A few months after the baby is born, your memory will return to normal.

While the condition is temporary, it is very frustrating especially when stress is all too common during pregnancy. If you or your loved ones feel that you are affected by pregnancy brain, you will have to adjust your lifestyle to ensure that short term memory loss doesn’t cause significant problems.

Firstly, you can start by keeping a notepad with you at all times.  Write down anything that you think you will need to remember in the future.  When you make appointments, write them down immediately so that you can ensure that you keep them.  Keeping a white board in a communal room will also enable your family members and partner to remind you of things you may have forgotten.

Keeping notes to verify appointments is much easier today thanks to smartphones, which definitely come in handy while you’re pregnant.  Smartphones have their own notepads that you can carry in your pocket wherever you go, as an iPregnancy checklist if you will.  You can also sync these notes to your laptop or home computer, and keep track of your schedule at home as well as on the go.

Finally, try to reduce the number of items you need to remember.  Pregnancy brain means having trouble remembering certain things, and you should enlist friends and family members to help you carry out chores.  If they can help out with some of your daily responsibilities, it means less stress on your life, and fewer items lost to pregnancy brain.
