Last year was a busy one for our group’s newborn stem cell labs and storage facilities in North America. A steady stream of families contacted our team, requesting the release of their stored newborn stem cell samples for use in stem cell transplant procedures or regulated experimental protocols in regenerative medicine. We are proud to have provided newborn stem cell preservation to allow these treatment options for families.

Here’s a look back at the samples released in 2022 to show how families who banked with our family banks are using their newborn stem cells.¹

17% of samples released were intended for use in a cord blood stem cell transplant, which is a procedure used to treat over 80 medical conditions.² 29 samples released were intended for use in regulated experimental regenerative medicine protocols.

Seventy-seven percent of 2022’s releases were sent to Duke University Medical Center for use by families participating in regenerative medicine research protocols.

Nearly two-thirds of 2022 newborn stem cell samples released were intended for sibling use in a transplant or regenerative medicine research protocol.

Samples ranging in age from two months to ten years old were released. Proper cryostorage ensures that cord blood samples remain viable for many decades.³
