They may not wear capes or fight crimes, but Armené, Lucia, and Wendy stepped up for their children in ways that only a superhero could. In honor of Mother’s Day, we’re highlighting how the bravery and love of these three moms helped save the day for their children.
“The only thing giving Sasoun any kind of immune support was her breastmilk.”
Just one week after giving birth to her second son, Sasoun, Armené and her husband, Michael, received news that no parent ever wants to hear. Sasoun had been diagnosed with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), a rare condition where individuals are prone to recurrent infections, leading to life-threatening complications if left untreated.1 So, Armené did what any mom would do — she stayed by her son’s side and provided him with immune support in the form of breastmilk.
“[I] had to go to the hospital and be in isolation,” she explains. “I wasn’t allowed to leave the room. I had to stay in the room with Sasoun for three months. It was very difficult.”
Luckily, this superhero mom had her own “magic bullet.” The family had banked their children’s cord blood, and Sasoun’s older brother’s sample was used in a stem cell transplant to treat Sasoun. Thanks to Armené’s unwavering devotion and foresight, Sasoun is now healthy and thriving against all odds.*
“She was so sick that I thought she was going to die.”
“If you see my daughter today,” says Lukia, “you would not believe how sick she was.” But Lukia’s daughter Carol still remembers a time when she felt like a prisoner in her own body. Sickle cell anemia left her in constant, debilitating pain — an experience she describes as a nightmare. As difficult as it was for Lukia to witness her daughter suffer, she knew she had to remain proactive. When she learned that Carol’s condition could potentially be treated with a stem cell transplant, she didn’t hesitate to pursue the treatment.
Just one month after receiving a stem cell transplant that utilized cord blood and bone marrow from her brother, Carol felt the pain leaving her body. Today, she’s a carefree young woman who can’t wait to see what the future will hold.*
“We have the umbilical cord blood! We saved it, we saved it!”
Wendy still remembers the day that her son, Keegan, was diagnosed with leukemia. “[It was] probably the worst feeling you can ever experience in your life,” she recalls. Fortunately, Keegan’s initial chemo treatment appeared successful, and the family was relieved to see his condition go into remission. So, Wendy explains, the decision of whether to bank her next child’s cord blood wasn’t an obvious choice. “I never thought in my wildest dreams we would need it,” she says.
Then, when Keegan was five years old, the family received more devastating news. Keegan had relapsed, and his chances of survival dropped to only 50%. Fortunately, Wendy had decided to bank her second son’s cord blood, which could now be utilized in Keegan’s treatment. On March 9th of that year, Keegan received a stem cell transplant that utilized cord blood from his little brother, Calvin. Wendy is overjoyed to report that he has been healthy ever since.*
